The ATS MIX Team has been waiting to do this show with their good friend John Lear for quite awhile now. Inspired by their Military.Com fan base who expressed an interest about the Air America / Continental Air Services, Inc. days of the CIA secret missions during the war in Vietnam, Dave and Johnny cornered their good friend to get his candid and uncensored story of this particular time in his life as a pilot for the CIA.
John Lear was a pilot for Continental Air Services, Inc. (CASI), a Subsidiary of Continental Air Lines which was in existence from 1965 to1975. It was formed in April 1965 by Continental Airlines at the suggestion of the United States Government. The objective was to provide a "less visible" air transport alternative to the CIA associated “Air America” for the growing Laotian support. Continental Air Services, Inc. (CASI) became operational in September 1965. Their pilots provided contract air support to Unites States Government activities. Continental Air Services, Inc. Ceased operations in 1975. 32 years later, John and his fellow CASI pilots and crew would finally get their just recognition.

This documentary is something that is very personal to me and thousands of us who served and died in Vietnam. It is an amazing 9 Episode audio documentary that was sent to me from a Vietnam Historian and co-creator of this project who is also a big fan of the Radio First Termer Saigon Show. It is a journey that takes the listener from the hopeful dreams of President John F. Kennedy, to the bitter end on a rooftop of the American Embassy in 1975. Why did we not take what we learned in Vietnam to prevent the mistakes that would follow after in other battles and conflicts? My name is Dave Rabbit. I did three tours in Vietnam from 1968 to 1971. In 1971, I wanted to do something for the front line troops WITHOUT CENSORSHIP and CREATED Radio First Termer. My Radio First Termer Podcasts include, among other things, (AVAILABLE ON MY ARCHIVE PAGE), a series of 4 recordings of one of my 21 Pirate Radio Broadcasts that were done from a Whore House in Downtown Saigon, Vietnam from January 1 to January 21, 1971 and were broadcasted LIVE throughout Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. It is the only KNOWN recorded show from that period of time. These recordings contain EXPLICIT MATERIAL, HARD ACID ROCK MUSIC, GI HUMOR and POLITICAL ANTI-WAR COMMENTS about the issues of the times which, of course, were SEX, DRUGS and ROCK and ROLL. These shows were created for the entertainment of the troops that put their lives on the line EVERY DAY in Vietnam and who were part of the huge Anti-War movement which was happening within the ranks of the military itself against the war in Vietnam. We SHUT DOWN at 11 p.m. on January 21, 1971 to prevent GETTING CAUGHT, as there was tremendous pressure on those that were protecting us. Listener Discretion Is ADVISED! Radio First Termer was a pirate radio station which operated in January 1971 in Saigon during the Vietnam War. The station was hosted by a United States Air Force sergeant calling himself "Dave Rabbit". The two other members of the crew were known as "Pete Sadler" and "Nguyen". Their real names are unknown. After three tours in Vietnam, "Dave Rabbit" and his friends launched Radio First Termer from a secret studio in a Saigon brothel at 20:00 hours (8 p.m.) on New Year's Day, 1971. The station broadcast for 63 hours over 21 days (between January 1, 1971 and January 21, 1971). The station played "hard acid rock" such as Steppenwolf, Bloodrock, Three Dog Night, Led Zeppelin, Sugarloaf, the James Gang, and Iron Butterfly, bands which were popular among the troops but largely ignored by the American Forces Vietnam Network. The music was mixed with antiwar commentary, skits poking fun at the U.S. Air Force, Lyndon B. Johnson, and raunchy sex and drug oriented jokes. The posting of sound clips from a Radio First Termer broadcast on the internet during the mid 1990's renewed interest in the station. In February 2006 "Dave Rabbit" came forward and told his story. He also did an interview for a bonus feature which will go with the DVD release of the film Sir! No Sir! which is about the G.I. counterculture during the Vietnam era. Although the frequency was always called FM69, in reality the show was broadcasted over numerous frequencies, in addition to FM69 as selected by the Radio Relay troops across Vietnam. It was also broadcasted over numerous AM frequencies, including 690 AM.
During September 2006, Dave Rabbit, along with a new crew including Charlie Cooper and Nadirah, went to Iraq to do a 35th Anniversary Show for the troops. The complete show is available HERE on Pod-O-Matic on MP3's as well as the original 1971 Saigon, Vietnam Show.
