When I was a Sophomore in High School, myself and a couple of other guys started a rock band called "The Playboys". Yes, Hugh Hefner was our idol ;) ! Anyway, as time went on and we became better and better, we became extremely popular in our area because we could mimic the groups of that era almost exactly. We were killer on Beatles Songs, The Kinks, Rolling Stones, etc. Speaking of "The Beatles"..... you will notice a slight similarity of our outfits for that period :) ! By the way.... I'm the one on the FAR RIGHT. I played guitar but was also the LEAD SINGER. From our Sophomore year to our Senior year, we added a few, got rid of a few (including me at one time), but basically the three main ones stayed in all variations of the group. At the beginning of my Senior Year, we wrote a song called "Don't Take Your Love Away". Sometime in late 1966 we went to a Recording Studio to cut the "45". As this was our first experience in cutting a record, we didn't have a clue what to expect. Those of you that HAVE know exactly what I am going to say now..... it was a MARATHON. We got there around 5 p.m. and finished the SIDE A track, "Don't Take Your Love Away", at 4 a.m. the next morning. And, as most of you know who have any knowledge of the VINYL DAYS..... there were TWO SIDES to a record. This is where the story gets good..... as.... we HAD NO SIDE B! Yep, with all of our hard work and dedication, the emphasis was on the MAIN CUT. So, the Studio Exec. tells us he has to get the record finished and we are just going to have to make up something. Fortunately for us, we were pretty good on making stuff up and, after screwing around with it for less than an hour, "Midnight In Mexico" was conceived and recorded as SIDE B. It is now 7:30 a.m. the following morning... and we look and smell like death warmed over. The record is released locally and in our State and the surrounding States, but with all the competition in those days, we just couldn't get enough promotion and fan base going to boost us up to even the ONE HIT WONDER status. So, within a month.... we were gone. Not long after this, we were playing at some huge Battle Of The Bands, which we won, but some guy was pissing me off in front of the stage..... so when the song was over..... I jumped into the crowd and got in a fight with him. Of course, it embarrassed my band, even though we won. So when we arrived back home the band decided it was in their best interest to go out on their own and give me the boot. Of course it is funny now, but then it really pissed me off. I start the band.... then 3 years later.... get fired by the band. Well, such is the life of a would be ROCK STAR! The songs are back to back with the MAIN CUT first.... followed by the BS CUT. Hope you enjoy it and that it brings back a few memories of THOSE TIMES for a few of you. "Rock & Roll and Sex & Booze Until We DIe.... That's The Senior Battle Cry!"
